AI detectors, tested on real student work

You have one suspicious essay open in a tab and thirty minutes of planning period left. This page is a free AI detector check navigator: which no-cost tools will scan your paste right now, which ones hide behind a signup wall, and where the free limits sit before you hit them mid-semester. We do not run our own scanner here, and we will not pretend a wrapped demo is a detector. What we offer is the honest map, built from an August 2026 session where we tried to push a 12-sample essay set through every free AI detector check teachers recommend, and most of them would not run.
Free tool roundups usually copy each other’s feature lists. We lead with what happened when we tried to use each one, because a free AI detector check that will not run is not free in any useful sense.

The three numbers that decide whether a free tier fits your workload: model coverage, paraphrase handling, and how much you can scan before the meter starts.
| Tool | AI models covered | Catches paraphrased text? | Free allowance | Signup needed? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GPTZero | 5 families (official site) | Weak per third-party tests | 10,000 words/mo (official site) | For pastes over 10k characters |
| ZeroGPT | Major models, per vendor | Untested this round | Free web scan; rate limits observed after 2 scans | No |
| Pangram | Major models, per vendor | Yes, verified in our test; flagged 3/3 human samples as AI | Free account required | Yes |
| Winston AI | Major models, per vendor | Partial, per vendor claims | 14-day trial, 2,000 words | Yes |
| Copyleaks | Major models, per vendor | Partial, per vendor claims | Limited free scans | Yes |
Allowances and prices rechecked on official sites in August 2026. Two practical warnings from our own session. First, a free web scan can hit an invisible session cap: ZeroGPT returned clean verdicts twice, then errored on every later attempt across both rounds, roughly three hours apart. Second, third-party tests consistently find free detectors weakest on paraphrased AI text, which is how most AI-assisted work reaches your desk. A clean score from a free tool is weak evidence; a flag is a reason to look closer, not a verdict.
Free tiers fail in three predictable moments. The first is volume: GPTZero’s official 10,000-word monthly cap disappears under one class of 800-word essays, and web scanners throttle long before you finish a stack. The second is evidence: free scans rarely store reports, so the day a parent challenges a grade you have a memory of a percentage, not a document. Paid tools like Originality.ai, Copyleaks, and Winston AI advertise stored, shareable, sentence-level reports in their documentation. The third is paraphrasing: if your students know about humanizer tools, you need detection built for rewritten text, which per vendor documentation and third-party tests lives mostly in paid tiers.
Our escalation path: spot-check free with ZeroGPT, confirm flags on a second tool, and move to a paid plan (Originality.ai starts around $14.95 a month, official site) the first time a score needs to survive a meeting. The full tested ranking, including paid options, is on our best AI detector for teachers page, and the daily-routine version of this advice lives on our AI checker for teachers page.
ZeroGPT, in our August 2026 session. It flagged both fully AI-written essays with no signup. Pangram and Winston AI required accounts, and GPTZero’s homepage scan never fired for us.
GPTZero’s official free plan caps at 10,000 words a month across five model families, and long pastes need an account. ZeroGPT’s free scanner began erroring after two scans in our session. Free tiers are also weakest on paraphrased text per third-party tests.
No single scan justifies an accusation. Confirm with a second tool, check draft history, and talk to the student. A 2023 Stanford-led study in Patterns found detectors flag English learners far more often.
When you scan in volume, need stored reports for grade disputes, or face paraphrased AI text. Originality.ai documents paraphrase detection and shareable reports; we did not test it hands-on this round.
